Make this thingy go away.
I like drawing, setting type, making websites that function oddly, taking photos, pretending I hate color, etc. I also really like carrots.

Universal Poster.

How To Kill a Zombie Poster & Comic This project presents a (somewhat) simple how-to process in two ways, a "universal" poster meant to mechanically present the information in an accessible way and an "idiosyncratic" comic which shows personality and the hand of the designer.

Crushing Five/Typography Poster 13" x 25" PosterThis poster presents type samples of five typefaces which I had attempted to display in a rigid grid system, but five is an odd number so it ruined my grid.

Jacque Samples.

Jacque TypefaceJacque is a narrative typeface; each keystroke is tied to an illustration of Jacque rather than a letterform, so when typing words or sentences you create a series of illustrations or comic panels.
I like to wrestle giant pandas on the weekends, but for my day job i like to make sweet design.

Images from magazine

Stem Magazine 7"x10", magazine Part of my senior thesis. I made a double sided magazine in which each side represented the dual meaning of the word "stem." One side reflected growth, while the other side represented the idea of holding back.

1st conversation

3 Conversations 15"x25", posters Posters I made based on 3 separate conversations.

Type Poster

Type Poster 20"x24", screenprint A poster showcasing 5 typefaces and their histories.
Maura enjoys the sea and the smell of plastic flowers. She likes to read catalogues, especially SkyMall, and pretend she is in the witness relocation program and must furnish a new life solely from the objects within. In terms of design, she prefers making things that are amusing instead of overtly intellectual.

This pillow has many arms to hug you while you do your homework.

tech-love fleece, lamé, hook-and-eye closures, elastic This cushion has removeable arms that can be tied in knots around the user. It was designed to be used with a laptop computer and to alleviate feelings of depression and negativity through its virtual embrace.

Here we have an array of paper kittens.

Kittens and Sports: an experiment in arbitrary rule-making paper This project is the result of an experiment wherein guidelines were picked out of a hat; my rules stated that the project must include kittens, sports, and interactiveness.

A sample of the innumerable quantity produced.

Lisa Frank Goes to War 4-color screenprint on various papers A group project with Elana Farley. One image from a color photograph was randomly overlayed with abstract designs. Each poster is unique.

Game Postcards series of 8 4x6 postcards Set of 8 postcards generated in response to a byzantine set of rules. It's about a man who wears a bug suit and sometimes a sombrero and is a little bit insane.

How to Make a Kite [Useless Directions] handmade viewmaster disc. Highly idiosyncratic how-to guide. The user gets text in one eye and pictures of convenience items in the other eye. Nearly impossible to build a kite like this.
My main interests are in interaction, experience, and environment design. I work primarily in the digital medium, and plan to work in game design after graduation. I'm an extracurricular ninja and like to work on my sewing, drawing, herbalism and alchemy skills in my spare time.

3D Digital Audio Environment Navigation Digital This is a design of a navigation system for a 3D, digital, audio-only environment. The user understands their sense of place in relation to the sounds around them and the navigation commands they input with the mouse and keyboard.

These nine symbols were created from five similar marks arranged into a set of symbols that relate to eachother, but were not intended to represent anything in particular.

Mark Making Digital I created a symbol set as part of a mark making project in Illustrator. The challenges of the project were to create a set of symbosl that relate to eachother, while paying close attention to the details of each mark.

A collar for Edgar Allen Poe's precursor to the Dick Tracy character.

Collar Drawings Colored Pencil In a fit of insanity, I drew out some wierd, life-size collars.
Paula has waded through her college education fishing for as much knowledge as possible, but now, with pruney fingers and toes, she is ready to evolve and further develop her slight obsession with water. One day she will avenge her deprived childhood and own a dog.

Inside View

Sky Dome foam, cardboard, cloth, plastic stars, kids This project was designed to help preschoolers with their spatial and motor skills. The dome's glow-in-the-dark stars are a suprise element discovered only when the entire piece is set up by collaborating children. Assembly is facilitated by the strategic placement of feeding and receiving ends on blocks and by color-coding the parts.
Yes. Yes. Umm...yes. No. Yes, I think so. Definitely not. I'm not sure yet.

Untitled time measured, time marked
by the number, we make hours
out in nature, things break down
course of cycle, come full circle

Untitled plywood flat black sawn
what are your inner secrets
whisper in my ear

Untitled plant your seed
do your deed
kick up your boot
let it take root

plant your seed
do your deed
sit back and wait
watch 'em take the bait

My ideas and designs evolve from my life experiences, personal interests, and of course people watching. I let my imagination and personality guide my design, giving me an end product that can be identified as my own. I'm looking forward to applying my personal style to the design jobs I encounter in the real world.

Way Finding: Fine Arts Library Way Finding: Fine Arts Library was developed as a solution to problematic existing signage, which inhibited the navigation of the space. The proposed signage, recognizable icons, color scheme, and directional floor lines work together improving the organization and navigation of the Fine Arts Library.

Besides such prestigious accolades as the three-time "Design Student of the Year" Award and President of the Professional Tooooobers of America Club, I suffer from an over-attraction to Ketchup, also known as Hypercondimentaphillia.

Poster, wristband, and postcard.

Tooooobers Collateral Promotional pieces designed for the Professional Tooooobers of America Club. This poster, wristband, and postcard were created around a set of given rules: content must be about tubing, must use minimal color, must incorporate a photo, must be based on an event, and final layout must be in the shape of a rectangle.

North vs South 8 Panels, each 8" X 8" These eight panels represent the inherent exterior qualities discovered as well as interior reactions encountered from my observation of a street in Austin, Texas. Specifically, I wanted to look at the North side of the block and its use of color and community involvement and compare that with the decay of both color and interaction that exists on the South side of the block.

Logo.

MANERR Collateral Created to depict both a flowing stream as well as an abstract "M", this logo/paper system was designed with a group for Mission Aransas National Esturine Research Reserve.
I'm too impatient for long walks on the beach, but I enjoy short walks at the dog park and bumming in front of a reality TV program. I am probably cooler online then in real life, so email me or drop me a myspace message.

The Universal Pain Compass Print media. The Universal Pain Compass has been developed for use in doctors' offices all around the world. It is a product available for victims of chronic pain who don't have a means of measuring the changing rates of pain they feel throughout the day. There are a variety of ways patients can graph their pain. As it becomes more widely known, a uniform style of interpretation will develop.

Pop Culture T-shirts Print media. I conducted a series of surveys to research current and remembered pop culture moments of my generation. I took my findings and created t-shirt designs based on the themes. These examples communicate ideas about sex, small dogs/designer monograms, and Mischa Barton's popularity.

Ah, where to begin?
I suppose it is only the things I truly feel resonate deep within my cavity that allow my to be so cheeky. And, design, darling...you are one of them.

2 Hours a Day

2 Hours a Day {more or less} My senior project grew out of the idea to "work two hours every day on something". After being surrounded with pressing responsibilities for 3 years, I felt I needed to dedicate more time to being creative, open-minded and unguided. In the process I managed to create a broad visual vocabulary.

Language Words used everyday, "design speak" and an excuse to letterpress led to a project in three parts. The first a play on notes and "elitist" design speak combining design lecture notes & post it notes. The second, a study of interjections. And finally, the ultimate language mash up.

Election_04

Audrey and Harry The 2004 election and previous voter turnout rates led me to to a hypothesis that if parents emphasized the value of voting and political awareness to their children at a young age, turnout and accountability may raise over time. I wrote, illustrated and constructed a children's book dedicated to the quest of two bears during their first election.
Laura was raised by wolves in the piney forests of East Texas. Fortunately, these particular wolves were very design savvy and in addition to raw meat, they fed Laura a healthy diet of design theory.

Angela likes: Angela's obsession for jeans started at a young age. There's no telling where it came from or how far it will go, but at the moment she can help you find the perfect jean for your body type. That counts for something, right? We tend to think so.

Untitled I photographed this picture and printed it in a beginning black and white photography class. The project was to investigate what we normally see from a different perspective.

Indermascalis Combining words, I devised the word "Indermascalis", which means "the process of implanting scales into the skin". Using found images I created a poster to illustrate this new word.

Scut-ze Three other students and myself developed this chair/toybox for use in kindergarden and preschool classrooms. We designed, furnished, branded, and implemented our product in a classroom setting.
Angela likes: children's book illustrations, call-out boxes, folk art, fish named Rupert, God, and macaroni and cheese. Design-wise, she is interested in: levels of communication and community, pattern, graphs, depth within brevity, and hidden narratives.

Reach Bag sewn cloth, velcro & buttons Communication aid for non-verbal/autistic children designed to encourage intimacy between child and parent.

Backyard Buddy Poster layout explaining a fictional measurement device for composting.

Textile Explorations Usage of traditional textile design methods to introduce contemporary themes and media.
When you are a person who easily overheats, you find yourself stopping in the most peculiar places. Maybe all of this people watching will pay off.

How To This "How To" project called for a universal solution and an idiosyncratic solution. The posters served as the universal solution and the idiosyncratic solution was to paste them alongside authentic wheat-pasted media. It was kind of like when MTV first played punk music, informative to the masses but had the power to reveal the secrets of an underground method of communication. Consequently, they were all gone within 48 hours.

Field Trips These are photographs taken while on our excursions about Austin and the Texas coast in the "Design Perspectives" class taught by Elaine Shen. All of the multiple exposures were in-camera and taken by an old Lubitel (which loosely means "amateur") medium format camera.

Folder System This folder system was designed and constructed for the 2005 portfolio review.
Casey laughs a lot and truly appreciates fashion. Is there any more to say?

A sample of some of the images.

Photographic Signage I've replaced generic signage with somewhat risque photography of my own. My photographic signs represent Men's & Women's restrooms, stairwells and elevators through themes of gender, sexuality and violence.

The complete presentation board.

Trail Markers These granite structures are polished on top to mimic the reflective quality of the water they lead to. I constructed a model out of plaster and hand-painted it in order to make it appear and feel like actual granite.

Posters showing both methods.

How to Survive a Shark Attack (Universal & Idiosyncratic Approaches) Universal Method: A generic poster-guide to be displayed on the walls of a scuba diving school. Idiosyncratic Method: A flashy poster displaying "Shark Guards", a set of neoprene wrist guards with the steps of surviving a shark attack down each (based on a ridiculous concept).
Elana Farley is threateningly decorative. Raised on a diet of carnivals, dioramas, kittens and photobooths for the majority of her youth, Ms. Farley is currently a concoction of food coloring, eternal screen prints, miracles, touristy grandmas and the glories of excess. She also makes delicious snacks while listening to This American Life on Sunday afternoons.

BBQ Pageant Wallpaper, 2005 This wallpaper was inspired by my own rich Texas heritage of barbeque picnic and pageantry culture, as well as by antique satin-eared rabbits, Google image search, and victorian floral decor. Hand- screened in the U.S.A. This is the first of a series of wallpapers created for my "Senior Project".

Phrenology Machine, 2005 Inspired by antique mechanical amusements, a measuring device of your head circumference and also your “self-worth” based off the psuedoscience of Phrenology.

The Apathy Project, 2004 The result of a seven week research project in which I explored the issue of non-voting among college-age women.

After surveying women, I created designs to reflect what was important to my demographic, encouraging them to vote in the 2004 presidential election through a wearable vehicle.

Head in the clouds, feet on the ground, Christina likes beautiful type, storytelling of all kinds, and taking lots of photos. See more at her website.

Story Map Each line on this Storymap charts one character's life and his/her intersections with other characters. Readers can enter these lives through the lines themselves, the call-out boxes which list major life events, or through the vignettes on the cards.

How to Stir-Fry Cutting Board A screenprinted cutting board with nested bowls designed to teach my brother how to stir-fry with emphasis on ingredients order and usability.

Loss Photographic form of a word. Loss is an intangible yet ever-looming presence, overwhelming yet subtle, not always obvious yet always unsettling, and above all, haunting.
